Those of you who've been following along at home may recall the never-ending saga of the Broken Bathroom. We started off nice and simply with a bit of hose, a funnel and some plastic tags to make a temporary toilet overflow. Eventually we graduated to the inflated condom down the toilet as trickle-preventative which soon got replaced by stopcock the first, leading to the constant cry 'The toilet is OFF. Repeat, the toilet is OFF.'
All was well in the world of the Temporary Fix for a while.
Then the cold tap on the bath started to drip. Little by little the drip became a whoosh and it needed fixing. Now, bear in mind the bathroom is about 60 years old and NEVER touched so it's impossible to change a washer without breaking a) the tap, b) the house and c) several bones. So there was a WHOLE SAGA which involved yelling and flooding and TB pacing and declaring he could NEVER FIX IT and me making patient suggestions which were CURSED before he finally went 'Oh yeah, that could work.' And by work I mean stop up the pipe so we could have the water back on and not, you know,
work. So we were down a tap. And up one stop (no cock this time, alas.)
And then last week the hot tap on the sink started to drip.
You can see where this is going, right? So I tell TB and he says don't worry it'll hold until we get the bathroom done (booked for mid-August thank the little baby jeebus and all his tiny minions). But then last night he comes in and says the drip's getting worse. Oh, I think. But I go off to have a shower anyway. (And by 'shower' I mean stick the hose on the sink taps and stand/squat in the bath. Using our bathroom takes SKILL.) And when I'm done I turn the hot water tap off, making sure I do a good job and WHOOOOOSH! It's flowing like it's never flowed before. That washer? Toast. The really burnt kind that crumbles when you touch it.
So off goes the water.
Today there has been much PALAVER and not one, but two trips to B&Q for appropriate parts as more MacGyvering was required. It's finally done and the scary levels of frenetic tension have reduced to 'give me a beer' (Carbon Neutral beer, ftw!) and the water is back on. We now have to turn on the hot water tap
below the sink but hey, we have another stopcock. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, stopcocks.
Only two potential pipes left to go. Think we can get it done by August? :)
